Snetor Maroc and Cap Juby, working together to rebuild a post-earthquake village

On 4 and 5 May 2024, our Snetor Maroc team travelled to the village of Ait Khlef El Oulya to help those affected by the devastating earthquake in the High Atlas on 8 September 2023. This isolated village, populated mainly by farmers, has benefited from a commendable initiative launched by the Cap Juby association to restore its infrastructure and strengthen its economic independence.

A Green reconstruction project

Supported by the Cap Juby organisation, the reconstruction project aims to breathe new life into this village buried under the rubble. Cruelly lacking in financial resources, Ait Khlef El Oulya is struggling to regain its economic and social stability. It is in this context that the Cap Juby association, with the financial support of the Snetor group, has decided to intervene.

To make this project a reality, funds were mobilised for the development of sustainable facilities that promote respect for biodiversity. Concrete measures have been taken to rebuild essential infrastructure and provide direct support to the local population, enabling them to recover from this tragedy.

The transition of this site to an ecovillage model involves :

  • Assessing local natural resources (lavender, thyme, thyme, sage, saffron) in order to define a plan for processing medicinal herbs and plants ;
  • identifying the agricultural infrastructure and equipment needed (greenhouses, drying areas, installation of solar panels) ;
  • Setting up training sessions for members of the community on sustainable farming practices and the processing of medicinal herbs ;
  • marketing these products, in particular through partnerships with local and regional businesses.

A long-term vision

The Cap Juby association, committed to helping the country’s vulnerable communities, led this initiative with fervour and determination. The initiative in Ait Khlef El Oulya is a perfect illustration of the strength of collaboration between humanitarian organisations and companies concerned about their social responsibility. Through these joint efforts, a glimmer of hope is emerging for the inhabitants of this Moroccan village, offering them the prospect of a more stable, healthy and prosperous future with sustainable development.
